Being Proactive

So, 1 year to do a Diploma in Musical Theatre.  Yep, you got that.  I’ve been auditioning for shows and though I’ve had a couple of recalls I wasn’t quite making it through to landing a job.  Now, I have friends who are working actors, singers and musicians.  Their encouragement and support has always been great, but, being told “you’ll get there” and “you just need to keep going” isn’t always what is needed.

You need to be proactive.  Getting despondent about whatever it is you are seeking is never going to get you anywhere.  I focussed a lot of my energy and work into being a better teacher.  Learning about the voice, systems and pedagogy.  Connecting with great people in the teaching field and also embarking on continuing to build a thriving coaching business.  This all took away from the real thing that I wanted to do.  That was to be a working singer (I also hold a not so secret desire to act but we’ll get to that;) ).

I was focussing on my business which was bringing me in a good income, and I LOVE seeing people improve in their singing lessons, so the joy that I get from teaching singing is real.  There’s nothing fake about how happy I get watching a “vocal victory” take place.  I was also singing at church and was putting my energy into serving at different Christian events, again I enjoy doing this.  I want to see people engage actively in our faith through music and I like helping people do that.  I’m unapologetic about that.  But I wasn’t even writing stuff for the church anymore.  The music I should be making and the creativity I should be unleashing was holed up somewhere and it’s wasn’t good.

I was becoming jaded.  That is never healthy and no good can come from that place. No good.

I could choose to stay in that place or choose to change.  I chose change.  I chose to get my mojo back. I chose to go and find somewhere where I can learn and test out this desire to be a working singer.

I’ve begun to release music again.  This would never have happened if I was stuck in rubbishy jaded land.  It has happened because I decided to be proactive about getting what I want from life.

So, go and get the life you desire.  Be bold in doing so.

Over and out. 🙂

“Why’d you do it?”

Yes, the big question, why whilst running a successful and growing business and living a pretty good standard of life did you choose to become a musical theatre student?

Something just wasn’t quite right.  I was dissatisfied with my life.  Don’t get me wrong I love teaching and my students are all kinds of great.  Things were getting exciting at church and my family life was cool but still… Something just wasn’t quite right.

You see the dream was to sing for a living. Not teach it. Not help others reach that goal but to do it myself and somehow (I thinks it’s called doing life) that just got a bit waylaid.  I’d done a few gigs and recorded some songs,  but the creativity I longed for and the way to express it wasn’t present.

So my GUGY was a way to journey into me being more creative and not putting up with being dissatisfied with life.

Life for me should be abundant, rich, overflowing.  That can be found in the simplicity of being creative, authentically you and embracing what you have been given.

Signing off for now.

Angel Of Mine!

Angel of Mine was recorded for a friend of mine for her entrance into her wedding.  It was great to be able to do that for my friend.  Since then people have been asking why I haven’t released it or other material.  “No time!” I said.  Well, I made time and here it is.

Listen to and download Joscelyn’s latest single Angel of Mine released internationally on iTunes, Amazon and Google Play.
